A new wireless startup called Zer01 is promising to deliver cheap voice and data service to U.S. smartphone users, via a mobile VoIP network.
The Zer01 service will piggy-back on AT&T’s mobile data network, complimented by the firm’s own IP backbone. The unique application developed by Zer01 will ensure good VoIP call quality, even over 2G data networks.
“We’ve developed specific algorithms in our technology that address latency issues across the GSM networks,” explained Zer01 CEO, Ben Piilani.
Zer01 will offer unlimited domestic voice and data service for $69.95 per month, and will not require customers to sign a contract. The service will initially work on Windows Mobile 6 smartphones, and will later be extended to Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, and Java-based devices.
Zer01 plans to begin beta-testing its service sometime next month
